Support for persistent hay fever and allergic rhinitis
If your symptoms return each spring, continue throughout the year or remain troublesome despite your usual routine, a consultation can help clarify your symptoms and discuss appropriate options. Available at Avesa Health Lower Templestowe, Essendon and Craigieburn.

A clearer plan for seasonal or ongoing symptoms
Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, can be seasonal, persistent or a combination of both. A consultation with an Avesa nurse gives you time to discuss what you are experiencing, what you have already tried and what next steps may be appropriate.
Our nurses can help you understand your symptoms and discuss established management options. Where relevant, they can also explain when further assessment or referral may be appropriate.

What may be causing your symptoms?
Allergic rhinitis occurs when the immune system reacts to airborne allergens such as grass and tree pollen, dust mites, mould or pet allergens.
Blocked or runny nose
Congestion, a runny nose, nasal itching or post-nasal drip can occur during a seasonal allergy flare or persist throughout the year.
Watery or irritated eyes
Itchy, red, gritty or watery eyes may occur alongside nasal symptoms and can make everyday activities uncomfortable.
Throat irritation, pressure or fatigue
Some people also notice throat irritation, coughing, facial pressure, headaches or tiredness when symptoms are ongoing.
Sleep and concentration
Ongoing symptoms can affect sleep, work, exercise and concentration, particularly during periods of high pollen exposure.
When symptoms keep returning
Some people find that seasonal allergy symptoms are manageable at certain times but become more difficult during spring or periods of high pollen exposure. Others experience symptoms throughout the year despite trying options such as antihistamines, nasal sprays or changes to their environment.
If you know that spring or another time of year is difficult for you, arranging a consultation before your usual flare may give you time to review your symptoms and plan ahead.
If allergy symptoms remain troublesome despite the measures you have tried, a structured review can help identify whether further assessment, testing or referral may be appropriate.
A consultation-led conversation
Your consultation is focused on understanding your individual circumstances and deciding what, if anything, should happen next.
We can discuss established approaches that may be relevant to your symptoms and explain how they are usually considered. Your nurse can also advise when another health professional or further assessment may be more appropriate.
When usual measures have not provided enough support, we can review your history, current management and goals. Any next step is considered carefully in light of the available evidence, suitability and individual circumstances.
A consultation does not guarantee a specific treatment, product, prescription or outcome. Recommendations depend on individual assessment and the nurse’s clinical judgement and scope of practice.
Preparing for your consultation
It may help to note when symptoms usually occur, possible triggers, how symptoms affect your daily life—including work, sleep and social activities—and what medicines or sprays you currently use.
